Joseph Pilates born

Born 1883 in Monchengladbach Germany Writes Return to Life Through Contrology in 1945 Immigrates to NY in 1926 Worked with individuals and dancers and strived to get his work accepted by the medical community He trained clients with his wife Clara until his death in 1967

1941

Elders 1st gen Pilates Teachers under Joe

About a dozen people worked closely with Joe during his lifetime including: Romana Kryzanowska – Began working with Joe in 1941 Eve Gentry – Began working with Joe in 1944 Ron Fletcher – Began working with Joe in 1948 Carola Trier – Began working with Joe in 1950 Kathy Grant – Began working with Joe in 1954 Mary Bowen – Began working with Joe in 1959 Lolita San Miguel – Began working with Joe in 1965 Each brought their own fingerprint to Joe’s work from dance to rehabilitation to actor/actresses to everyday people to high performance athletes

1989

Brent’s Early Career

1989 Graduation from PT school at UCSF 1989–1992 Brent studied with Ron, Romana, Eve and Carola Formed collaboration with Ken Endelman and Elizabeth Larkam 1989 Opened Anderson Physical Therapy and Pilates in Sacramento. Works with Sacramento Ballet company 1990 Meets Shelly Power

1992

Polestar Pilates founded

1992 Founds Polestar Pilates as an international Pilates education company 1992-1995 Curriculum designed to teach the Pilates method to students. Mat and Reformer diploma. First written and practical exam in Pilates profession The beginning of “Principles of Movement”

1992

Pilates leadership comes together

1992-1999 Pilates world under siege due to proprietary claim to the trademark resulting in “Pilates” becoming a generic word 2001 Pilates Method Alliance formed to reestablish standards, repertoire, and quality Brent is part of principal leadership among elders and other Pilates schools working to protect the integrity of Joe and Clara Pilates work

2005

Brent receives his PhD in Physical Therapy from University of Miami

Brent publishes his dissertation, “Effect of Pilates Training on Lumbo-Pelvic Stability and Functional Movement” marking a significant contribution to the field of rehabilitation and movement science

2016

Brent launches the Pilates Hour webinar
